History of Fluoridated Water

The story of fluoridated water goes back over 100 years ago to a small town in the mountain of Colorado. Generations of children born there developed brown stains on their teeth. No one could figure out why. But it become so common the local people called it the “Colorado brown stain”.

After much investigation by dentists and scientists, the mystery was finally solved around 1910. The brown coloring was coming from the drinking water that had high levels of fluoride. The fluoride had filtered into the water from local aluminum mines.

Although their stained teeth looked unsightly, the children had almost no cavities. Dental experts lowered the fluoride levels to eliminate the staining, but the teeth remained cavity resistant.

When this news spread across the country, many communities began adding limited amounts of fluoride to their drinking water.

There is a lot of conversation today about the negative effects of fluoridated water on our health. There have always been skeptics who questioned the benefits of adding fluoride to drinking water. The issue is now being discussed worldwide.

Experts have long argued about whether or not fluoride in drinking water is toxic to humans. Recent studies reveal that there is evidence that it can be toxic. Extra high levels of fluoride in drinking water have been linked as cause of neurotoxicity in adults. This affects our memory and learning ability negatively.

Both the Harvard School of Public Health and the China Medical University in Shenyang have found that there are strong indications that fluoride also has an adverse effect on children’s cognitive learning development.
