Diuretics are used to help the kidneys remove salt, or sodium, and excess water. By doing this, the amount of blood that needs to go through the blood vessels is reduced lowering the blood pressure. There are three different types within the groups of diuretics, thiazide, loop, and potassium-sparing. There are typically less side effects from people taking medications within the thiazide group. Doctors will continue to try medications until they find one that will work for you. If these medications do not work well enough for you, there are others that can be used, but they are less common and may run the risk of more side effects for you.
