My insurance is from another state-there is no coverage at my local ER. I would have to take my toddler on a half hour drive to get her to an ER-would I be able to get my bill paid if I went locally?

This worries me a little as, if it's a big enough emergency to need to go to the ER I don't want to be driving a long way with her. How would I go about getting insurance to pay for it out of network?

It depends on the insurance. Some of them you can submit for reimbursement, others won't cover it. I would call the insurance to find out their policy. 30 minutes drive isn't that bad for a non-emergency, or even a minor emergency like a head bump or stitches or something. Compared to the huge bill, I would probably take her to the one that would be covered if it's only 30 minutes away. I took my kids to Children's even though there are 3 hospitals on the way and it's a 45 minute drive, the care is better there!

I would think this would depend on how your plan is set up. When I went to college 5 states away I could go to the ER and it was covered, I had choice over where I went, but it had to be something I couldn't see a regular doctor on during regular hour by making an appointment. If it were something like a cold I had to get permission from my Primary care physician to go to the ER or see another doctor and get treatment. I would ask about it, since you obviously don't need to drive an extra 30min if its something that needs an ER trip. I would imagine if you called an ambulance and they took you there it would be covered...perhaps they would take that into consideration?

Is there a difference is the benefits/side effects between ACE inhibitors and ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers) to make the added cost of the ARBs (e.g., Diovan) a better choice?
