Does treating symptoms make the cold go away faster?

My friend is absolutely positive that a cold will go away faster if you use OTC cold medicines. I believe that they make someone feel better but do not shorten the length of a cold. Which one of us is correct?

No, the actual cold does not go away any faster but you feel better while it lasts. This is a common misconception but as of yet, there is no sure cure for the common cold. There are a couple new products that are supposed to shorten the duration but I think the reviews are mixed as to their effectiveness.
