I just recently lost a lady I was taking care of who suffered from dementia. It seems that it progressed extremely quickly she went from mild dementia to the stage they hit when actively dying in a matter of a few short months. Do you know this to be normal?

I think that it depends on the person, and possibly if they have any other problems along with the dementia. My grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, and had a breathing problem on top of it, but she held on a long time (about 6 yrs). The person you were taking care of may have had some other underlying disorder that caused her to go down hill so fast.

There are several different causes of dementia. Some progress very slowly over a number of years and some progress rapidly. When I worked in healthcare, dementia was always one of the most heartbreaking diseases to watch. Hard on the victims and hard on the families.

She did have CHF and I put her in respite care for 2 days while I got caught up on household and kid things and in those 2 days she went for coherent and alert to actively dying. They say she was not willing to let go when she was at home with us but since she wasn't she must have felt comfortable enough to let herself go. That just is hard to swallow we all loved her dearly.
