Blood donations drop

Blood donations drop in the summer. Why, is it that everyone is too busy having fun? It is really something because more blood is said to be used in summer than any other time.

I'm not sure about everywhere else, but around here the blood drives are mostly held in the winter. Its not usual to have 4 or 5 in a week during winter months in my home town and in other surrounding areas (30 min or less from home), but during the summer months your lucky if there is one drive a month. I also think right now the gas prices are having something to do with the decrease in donations, people just don't want to spend the extra money in gas to go anywhere out of their way.

Seeing as how there is rarely ever enough blood it doesn't surprise me. I wonder what the numbers are for the amount of people turned away at blood drives in the summer for being too dehydrated to safely give blood as well?

It is a wonder that this occurs. I imagine it may have a lot to do with the extra risk in summers such as dehydration and such. I also know that I've donated plasma several times and have even on occasion been turned away. That may be more of a location issue but you would think with shortages coming about as they do that no one would ever be turned away.

Donating blood and plasma are very different as you can donate plasma much more often than you can blood. A lot of folks don't try to donate because they were turned away once so they don't try again. I give as often as I'm allowed and will continue to do so as long as I can.

Yeah I have not yet been turned away when donating blood but I have when donating plasma only being told that they did not need donations at that time. I have been back several times since so I imagine it has to do a lot with timing and possibly storage restrictions or something of that nature.

I think it's as simple as people going on vacation and aren't following their usual schedules.

Most people I know donate blood as part of their schedule. They have a usual place and time they go to donate and if they are on vacation they just don't get around to doing it. But the again, those people who make it a habit to donate really aren't the ones that need to think about giving blood, the majority of people do not donate. The blood banks need to somehow get those people to think about giving blood and to get them into the habit of donating winter or summer.

I think I have seen one in mid summer here and one about Jan/Feb as well. I can not give even though I think I have outgrown my anemia they don't want to chance it. And of course its me having a blood type 0 so I could donate to anyone, but only receive from my own type.

I think that people are just up and about a lot to the point that scheduling a blood donation, is the last thing on their minds.

I just think as a group of people we never make the time because we figure someone else will do it and usually it never happens.

That is true too. I have known many people who have said there are plenty of people donating so they do not believe they would really make a difference.
