Subject: | Disability? | |
I am not sure that I want to address the likelihood that I shouldn't be working, with my doctor. Every once in a while, when I have to see him due to some new pain that defies the vicodin, the last was the arthritis in the base of my thumb, of all things, he asks what type of work I do. Some of this, I know, is because he doesn't see me too often, but I have a feeling he might be leading up to something unpleasant. How would you feel about the prospects of being told you probably shouldn't work your "day job" anymore? Would you keep skirting the issue, as I have done? I don't even know how to go about getting disability! Sheesh! |

If I were you I would definately speak to my doctor about the problems you are having. If he feels that you should not be working (this decision will usually be made after doing some tests to confirm the problem first) then this is most likely what is best for you. As to applying for disability - your doctor will be able to help with that. Usually you can start the application process either through your local social security office or through your local assistance office. One thing to discuss with your doctor, if you want to try to keep working, is to see about accomidations in your work place. Hope this helps out and I hope everything works out for the best. Good Luck |

DianaR, skirting the issue is not a good idea. The best thing to do is to find out exactly what's happening and then deal with the results and what actions to take in your best interests. |

Using your doctor to help you when you are in need is part of his job. After he sees what he can do for you then it's time for you to see what you can do for yourself. As for getting disability, you can look that up online or get help from one of the lawyers that are always advertising on TV. But let your doctor in on what's bothering you. He might be able to help and that's what you are paying him for! |

Most people ignore their pains and ills because they don't want to "hear anything unpleasant." And they certainly do not want to lose the life they are leading right now. However, this is a very dangerous thing to do. Certain disorders can be easily cured if only you tackle them in their earliest stages. However, if you put it off or ignore it with the fear that it might affect your life in an adverse way, the disorder might step into a chronic condition that is difficult to control. If I were you, I would discuss the issue completely with the doctor and follow a proper treatment plan. |
