Women Do Get Heart Disease
|
|
Nausea, shortness of breath and sharp chest pain are common symptoms of heart attack. But when women complain about it, it might be chalked up to anxiety or heartburn.
Many doctors still assume that women under the age of 55 seldom have heart attacks. The result is that women who show symptoms of heart disease are almost seven times more likely to receive a misdiagnosis than men.
So if you're a woman and you have symptoms such as:
pressure or burning in the chest,
shortness of breath,
irregular heartbeat,
dizziness,
sweating,
fatigue,
and nausea,
get to a doctor and insist that you are having heart problems. If the doctors don't listen, demand a stress echocardiogram and start to mention lawsuits if they still don't take you seriously.
Just because the doctor tells you that it's just hysteria or anxiety it doesn't mean you have to listen. It's your health and you have a right to be taken seriously!

Unfortunately, this happens all too often. Doctors often discount what women tell them as stress, anxiety or even depression instead of exploring further and discovering the underlying cause of their symptoms. It is up to us to push the issue with the doctors until they start listening.

This is still a problem but it is improving thanks to the efforts of groups like the American Heart Association and the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation to mention just a few. They have made a great deal of effort to sensitize the medical profession to the issue.

Everyone gets heart disease. It's the number one killer, on the global scale. So treat the symptoms carefully.

Thank you for this post. It is so important that women be educated on the signs of heart disease (they differ greatly from symptoms men experience). Women also need to be pro-active when it comes to dealing with their doctor.
