Vicodin for sever menstrual cramps

My 17 year old daughter was just prescribed Vicodin for her menstrual cramps. I can not believe that in todays society, a doctor would prescribe something so strong for cramps.

Is she in that much pain? If she is then she needs the pill and is lucky to have it.

All I know is that I am in severe pain from arthritis in my hips and I had to beg some doctors for any drug to help me. Even my pain management doctor, who prescribes narcotics all the time, always does it with a lecture.

Just make certain your daughter just takes it for pain from her period and not at any other time during the month. If she's in pain and the pills relieve it, then she probably won't have a problem with the drug.

I'm a woman who used to experience such thing in times of menstruation. But I never took any medicine because I'm afraid of the effects. Actually, it's my first time to hear about Vicodin. Is it safe and effective?

Wow, I would be really concerned about a 17 year old being given a script for narcotics. I would definitely try other thing, including alternate therapies, before allowing my teenager to have a controlled substance.

Well if her cramps are that bad then she needs them. I actually have really bad cramps myself but I doubt my doctor would prescribe me that. What doctor did she go to?

I never realized that you could get vicodin for cramping. I need to check with my doctor about that it could be very helpful since I have severe cramping that time of the month.

I'm really glad to read that people here understand that when people are in severe pain and need a narcotic, that they should get it.

Too many times, I've heard people pontificating about how bad it is that people take narcotics even if they are in severe pain. I always say that those are the lucky ones who have never suffered with constant severe pain, and the minute they did, their opinions would change in a second!

Just one hint to your daughter: Narcotics are extremely constipating. While taking them she should remember to eat lots of fruit and fiber and drink lots of water.

I remember my teenage days when my cramps were bad enough that I had to lay in bed for days. I missed a lot of school. If there were something heavy-duty to mobilize me, I would have done it.
