Unexplained Crying
|
|
My mom becomes randomly very sad and cries even though she is on an anti-depressant. She's gone through menopause and had a hysterectomy and her hormones had finally seemed to regulate out but she called me this weekend crying like her dog had just died. Could the anti-depressant not be working or just a hormone fluctuation or anything else she should ask her doctor about?

Sometimes an antidepressant takes more than a few weeks until it is working at it's fullest. If your Mom doesn't seem any better soon, than you should talk to her doctor to see what else can be done for her.
A woman my friend knows was also on an antidepressant and she was still depressed. Her doctor tried another drug and within a few weeks the woman is once again enjoying life.
Your taking time to talk with your Mom also has to be helpful. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

Most anti-depressants can take about 6 weeks to see the full effect. One exception is Celexa which should make a difference within the first two weeks. If it's been longer and her symptoms haven't improved, she definitely needs to talk to her doctor. People are often started on a small dose to see how they react so it may need to be increased only rather than switched. It depends on if she has had any improvement or not.

She should probably go back and see her doctor again, there are many different forms of anti depressant medication, it could just be a case of finding one that works for your mum.
I wish you luck in helping her and I hope she gets well again soon.

If after several weeks on anti depressants there is no improvement I would go back for a second opinion or maybe a new prescription at least.

She should see her doctor about this. My father was on anti-depressants and they actually made him more depressed (for whatever reason). Also, is she on any other medications that may be counteracting the anti-depressant?

I would say- see her doctor. Hormones play havoc on us women. I'm wondering if it has something to do with menopause and the hormones she takes.
I'd say go to the doctor-

Why did she have a hysterectomy?
Contrary to what many doctors will say in order to get the hysterectomy done, it is like being castrated.
She could also be suffering from some end of life issues.

She has been on anti-depressants since 2000, going through small dose, higher dose, switch with several different actual meds. Some have really made it worse, and some have had awful side effects. She's been on this one for at least a month. She sees her doctor once a week at least so she knows whats going on.
She had a hysterectomy because of multiple reproductive health issues. It really was the best choice and not one of those, you need it out because thats what we do at menopause.
She isn't on traditional hormone replacement, she takes a naturopathic treatment from our herbalist. The chemical replacements were awful.
She takes a water pill and a blood pressure pill, neither of which should interact that I've found. She's not dying, she's just rather emotional at times for no apparent reason. I'd say she has PMS but obviously thats not quite the case.
