Gardasil vaccination
|
|
By now, Gardasil has been on the market for what - about a year? Gardasil prevents infection by 4 strains of HPV the most prevalent STD.
The target age of the vaccination is very low, some as young as 9 and up to 26. But is the vaccination really necessary or is abstinence the key?

I think it is a mixture of both. If we do not preach some restraint to our children, the problem will continue to spiral out of control.

I agree, but with the prevalence of HPV in women today, and how dangerous the virus is, I think it is a good idea to have girls vaccinated at a young age.

We have chosen not to vaccinate our daughters for this, but we do discuss sex and disease prevention (with the older ones). When they are older they may decide for themselves if they want the vaccine. In another 5 years there will be more information available for more informed decisions.

Whoops, I just posted something similar in the reproductive health section because I hadn't seen yours.
Anywho, I don't think it's a necessity, but I also don't think abstinence is key. I think it's more important to teach them how to protect themselves instead of either just giving them vaccines and hoping for the best....or telling them "no," and knowing they'll do it anyway.

I think it is a good idea to do it now. You can preach abstinence- as my mother did -and do all the right things and even have a very intelligent kid but as smart as they are stuff happens. This way we are covering the just in case scenario.
