Exercising & Menstrual Periods

I usually walk every other day for about an hour. I haven't had a menstrual period though in over a month. Every now and then I sometimes skip a period because of stress. Could exercising make you skip periods?

You can skip periods because of stress? I never knew that, I would think it would make it heavier or longer, not skip!

Exercising is one thing that probably could make your period skip though, people who exercise more than others are more likely to get their periods later than usual, so I think it could make you skip, but that's just my opinion.

Are you below a healthy weight? I think you have to have a certain level of fat to maintain your menstration. You might also look into having your thyroid and cholesterol checked.

Just walking shouldn't stop your periods, since walking is not really stressful on your body. If you have always been sensitive to stress and outside things that can affect your period, then I'd think this is just another such time.

Don't give up walking! It's the best kind of exercise, one that will serve you well over your lifetime.

To have exercise cause you to miss a period (or start missing regularly) you need to be below normal body fat. Stress can cause you to miss, as can being too overweight sometimes. The most common cause in women with regular periods seems to be stress in the women I talk to.

I don't think so, exercising normally helps me to have good periods, the more I excersice before the easier the pains are on me. I don't think there is a direct link to the absence of it.

I remember I worked with a lady that said she could skip her periods at will, or something similar to that. I always thought it was there for a reason and not fool around with it.

Yeah, typically exercise is suppose to help reduce cramping and I've heard tell that it can shorten your length, but I have never heard of it stopping someones period.

I to have have stress related lapses in my menstruation but I also have several cervical issues which are contributing factors. I would make an appointment just to be safe.

It really depends on the person.
My daughter had leptospirosis and didnt get aperiod for two months. Illness as well can cause you to skip.
According tothe merck manual, anytime thatteh body neds cortisol or aadrenalin it causes the body to take a step backwards.
Also undiagnosed infections or unknow allergies can also cause a skip or two or three. Low TSh cancause skips elevated can cause frequent periods...
Our bodies are worse than an antique car with a tricky starter.....

Nice info jimmys devoted. I had not realized that there were so many things that could affect our monthly cycles.
