Endometriosis

My doctor suspects I have endometriosis and I'm scheduled to go back in to talk to him again soon. I don't know much about it, though, so will I have to go on medication for it? How do they usually treat it?

It will depend on how serious the problem is for you. I haven't heard of medications that help but there are surgical procedures that do. Endometriosis is when cells grow in the wrong place such as on the outside of the uterus or ovaries, etc. It can be quite painful and cause heavy periods. Most often, they can go in and freeze the areas to kill the out-of-control cells. This is a problem that will go away when you hit menopause but depending on the severity, you may need to something about it now.

My wife was treated for endometriosis. She was not given any drugs. She underwent a laparoscopy procedure where they used a laser to burn up the offending cells. The procedure did help some but it is not unknown for the problem to recur. Yes menopause will cure it but for some women that seems like a long wait.
