Douching

Is douching good or bad for you? I douche twice a month but a friend told me that it is bad because it gets rid of all the good bacteria and that it could cause an infection.

I heard it was bad for you, but I'm not really sure, I've never done it. So I guess I'm not the right person to answer but I did hear before it could be bad.

I did this when I younger and stopped after I was about 20 or so, and I could tell a difference. Slight but it was there.

When I was younger we were told douching was okay, good even. But in the last 25 or so years there is definitely a different light on this. I have heard it is bad and should be avoided. Not only because it washes away good bacteria, but also because it can push bacteria into the cervix and possibly the uterus, which is an infection risk.

Newer research does indeed show that douching is not healthy. If your vaginal area smells bad enough you need to douche there could be bigger problems. The vaginal area is a very delicately balanced one with bacteria and such, and doing things like douching and using harsh soaps, etc is not beneficial in any manner.

I have been told that it is not at all healthy to do. You have heard correctly, it does take away the beneficial bacteria in a woman's system.
Douching also can push an infection up into the uterus and that will make the infection worse.
Simply keep the area clean and free from sweat and that should be enough to keep healthy. There's no good reason to douche unless a doctor prescribes it.

Also agree on the no douching. My mother had also told me to wear cotton panties because it allows air (ie:breathing) and to always wear no panties when going to bed, allowing also additional time for airing out. Must be something to it, I am 52 and have had only one yeast infection which was caused by antibiotics in my teens.

I know the doctors tell you that excessive douching is not good. I would think douching once a month would be fine.
I know I do it- I hate that not-fresh feeling after my period ends.
They do say that douching can take out the good bacteria.

I also heard the same thing. But I think once a month is okay. I don`t do it but I used to. But if you start to have problems you betters stop. Ask your doctor how many times a month is okay.
