Walking to Lose Weight

I had gall bladder surgery the end of February and was told to walk a lot afterwards, so I did. My husband walked with me and fortunately, he is still willing to walk with me in an effort to lose weight. We're both walking the same distance together and I'm losing a little weight while he is slowly gaining weight.

He actually has a much faster metabolism than I do so this is puzzling to me.

How interesting! When I had surgery, they told me to walk walk walk too, and it really did help!

Is it possible that your husband is gaining muscle? That's the only thing I could think of right away.

That was my first thought, too, as muscle weighs more than fat. That's why many people are shocked to actually gain a few pounds when starting going to the gym. The best thing is to not just base things on weight but also how you feel, how your clothes fit and your measurements.

If it's not the muscles, then maybe he is consuming more of the wrong foods and thinking that since he is excercising he will work it off.

To lose weight, we have to burn more calories than we are taking in. It is possible that the walking is the only common denominator, but he might well be eating more, or have less strenous activities during the day, than you do.

I am going to agree with the others. He is either taking in more food than he used too or he is gaining muscle. Muscle does weigh more than fat.

How is his clothing fitting? Men not only lose weight faster, but they gain muscle faster too. I'd guess that he is gaining muscle. Do his legs look sturdier and does he feel good?

Walking does a lot for you, more than just helping you lose weight. It helps the heart and lungs too. I think that the good way outweighs any weight gain in helping you both get healthier.

Good luck and keep on walking!

Age tends to change things sometimes. I used to have a super high metabolism and now its slowly fading. I am working out more to try and balance it now.

Thanks for all of your replies. He does seem to be eating more lately. We used to eat out a lot and he thought he was gaining because of that. However, since he retired, we eat at home most of the time and he is gaining even more weight. He may think the exercise will take care of it but it's not. His legs don't appear heavier but his waistline does and I'm concerned about him.

He's probably eating more. He should drink a lot of water if he really wants to lose weight.

Most people have the problem of drinking their calories away rather than eating them. A lot of people decide to drink high caloried drinks such as sodas and coffee which makes you gain weight.
