The "D" Word

I really hate to use the word "diet" when it comes to weight loss. To me diets don't work, a change in your lifestyle does work. Eating right and in small amounts with activity is going to help you lose weight and get/stay healthy. I've had weight issues all of my adult life and tried a lot of diets and finally woke up and decided to change my lifestyle to eat better and to try and be more active. I am NOT in great shape by any means but just the little things you do make a big difference.

You don't have to diet, just make the right food choices.

Healthy and right food choices can impact your weight in a good way.

Proper exercise is also an effective combination as well.

I don't think anything is wrong with the "D" word at all. Call it by any name - but really part of that necessary lifestyle change is a change in what and how we eat, in short, our D-iet. ;)

You said it best, the only diet that really works is a change in lifestyle. People that go on real strict diets may lose weight temporarily, but have a hard time keeping it off in the long run. If you make small changes to your diet that you can stick to, that’s when you get lasting results.

Little things do make a difference, but I would not go with prescription meds for weight-loss until you talk it over with your doctor. I would leave that as a last resort.

I agree that the word diet can be misinterpreted to just mean losing weight. I've been using the term "meal plan" to anyone who asks me how I lost weight.

I also say I only lost weigh as a byproduct of trying to get healthier. If I lost weight at the same time it was a plus. For every day I stuck to my meal plan and did my walking (my exercise choice) I felt I was successful.

I only weighed myself once a month because I know how wrapped up I can get in numbers, and might go off my plan if I didn't lose anything or heaven forbid gained. I know the scale lies a lot and for many reasons.

For the sake of health I would never go on any diet pills. I want to wind up healthier than I started, not thin but ill.

I agree with K to the J, all you have to do is eat right. Diet pills don't work. The ads that we see on tv tell us that if we buy their product we can look like this. It's a waste of money.

Some of the dieting programs DO work, such as those advertised on TV. The problem is as mentioned here, that you stop the diet and go back to your old ways, and that's not healthy.

Thanks for all of the great words of wisdom. I don't think I'd go the pill route (prescription or over-the-counter) because half the time the side effects are worse. I have changed my eating habits but have also caught myself going back to my old ways all too often because of the convenience of it. I have to get back into the right routine and eating habits and stick to it.

Thanks again.

I've tried various diet plans in the past but I will be the first to admit that they have been nothing more than fads. Ifound it too difficult to keep up and eventually wasted whatever 'gains' I could have attributed to the plan.

By definition "diet" is the foods eaten, as by a particular person or group. Yes there are other definitions but if you think of a diet as bad thing, you are not going to want to take part in it. "Diets" as advertised on tv often do not work because they are too strict and are difficult to follow. A plan that allows for reward and food that you like is much better.

I hope that makes sense, if not I'll get back here soon and try to clarify.
