Saggy Skin

When you lose a significant amount of weight, but relatively slowly, how long does it take for the skin to tighten up? I am concerned about the remaining dog jowl look to my midriff and would really hope that eventually it will disappear.

It will take work at doing exercises to tighten the skin back up. Provided the weight loss was slow, generally exercising that particular area will eventually have it firm again. Everyone is different and the skin's elasticity can vary by age, etc, so no one will be able to give you a specific time frame.

In most cases with consistent work and time, you can get your stomach back into shape without having to go through surgery. It would also be a good idea to not only do cardiovascular exercise to burn the fat, but also some exercises focusing on tighten your abdominal muscles.

I have found that exercises work the best, little ones with lots of repetition for tightening and toning. So for the belly, crunches work best.

Do you have any ideas for someone that can not do crunches due to back issues? I have this problem myself and need something thats low strain for the back.

Sometimes it depends on how much you gained and lost. If you had alot of weight gained you may have stretched the skin past its ability to regain elasticity even if you go slowly. As for things that are better on your back, some of the ab machines they advertise claim they are low stress, but I've never tried any of them.

I agree with purple that it depends on how much you lost. It's possible that it's just beyond that point where it'll tighten up on its own, but otherwise, it'll take some time and just keep working at it.

I think as we age we lose a lot of our skin elasticity. It has a tendency to droop even before losing the weight. After losing weight it gets even more droopy. I think toning exercises might help a little for seniors too.
