Too Many Prescriptions
|
|
It seems like the older I get the more prescription medication my doctor thinks I need. Unfortunately, I do seem to need it. I can remember when I was hesitant to take more than tylenol and now I take several prescriptions per day. I find it depressing. I also find it to be entirely too expensive even with health insurance. I hate spending money on these!!!

My grandparents both take an entire handful of pills three times daily. I grew up watching them take the pills often, but didn't think anything of it until I got older and realized they were downing 8-15 pills morning, afternoon, and evening (the amount varied by time), and many of them were to counteract the side effects caused by other pills. I don't know how they could afford them....or stomach them either, for that matter.

I can identify with taking pills. I just recently started on a new pill that wasn't covered by my health care plan. Fortunately, it's been added now so I'll get most of the money back.
Health insurance is an important concern for everyone, I'd say.

It's not just the elderly who take many drugs. All people are prescribed many drugs too. On one hand I am happy that so many diseases can be helped with medication. I'd hate to be sick and not be able to do anything to help. But that being said, sometimes doctors prescribe drugs either because the patient insists on them, or they want to try anything to help conquer an illness that can be helped in other ways.
It's up to the patient to decide how many drugs they will take. If you need the pills to help you, there should be no shame to taking them. But you still need to try and live as healthy a lifestyle as you can to maybe be able to cut back on pills.

My wife has to take a number of prescription drugs and unfortunately if she stops taking any of them for too long it could cost her her life. The only thing that saved us from the excessive costs and bankruptcy was the Medicare Prescription Drug Program and various hardship programs. One of her prescriptions costs $1,126 a month. If it weren't for the hardship program, I don't know what we'd do.

I think, especially for elderly folk, it is a good idea to sit down with one's doctor or pharmacist once in a while and make sure that all the pills are needed, that they are all still the best choice, and that nothing new is known about bad interactions.
One study a while ago showed that older people were likely to be taking pills to fix the problems caused by pills for things that weren't a problem any more. There have been a lot of stories about older people who were thought to have dementia who actually had a bad reaction to a medicine or to a combination of medicines.
