Alzheimer's

I was watching Boston Legal last night and it was an episode where a patient's legal decision maker wanted to force the hospital to allow assisted suicide, via pain medication. I don't want to get in to that argument, but they were saying that Alzheimer's, at the end, shuts down the body. I thought it was just a mental/emotional affliction.

I also saw this episode of Boston Legal. Both of my parents had Alzheimer's and both lost their mental ability first but then because more of the brain is deteriorating, they lost bodily functions. It almost seemed like they forgot about toilets and walking and eating. It's such a sad disease.

Its very painful to watch someone close to you go through Alzheimer's. It is the 7th leading cause of death in America and those with Alzheimer’s die an average of four to six years after diagnosis, but the duration of the disease can vary from three to 20 years.

My cousin was diagnosed with it and I'm concerned about him. At first it might not seem too bad but it gets increasingly worse as time goes by. I know one man who quit his job so he could take care of his wife.

It's horrible watching a person go through this.

I think that Alzheimer's is a mental disease but can also effect the way that you function, not only the way you think.

So I suppose one can only become brain-dead overtime with Alzheimer's disease.

It does indeed begin to effect your physical health as well. Its sometimes hard to notice when so many other things are going one such as dementia, etc, but it does indeed happen. Since the brain is in charge of all functions, even those that are involuntary it makes perfect sense.
