OTC Paternity Test

A friend of mine wants to try one of those OTC paternity tests to find out if he is the father of his child. Regardless, he wants to remain in the baby's life, but it's just really itching at him to know. Does anyone know if the test can be done without the mother finding out at all? He would just need samples from himself and the baby, right, not the mom?

The kits can be puchased for $19.99 they are surprisingly low-tech. The kit includes instructions, consent forms, three packages with two cotton swabs each, and envelopes.

The swabs are used to collect saliva from inside the cheek of the child, the alleged father and optionally, the mother, then mailed back.

So he would not need the mother to get results back from the test.

I think that it is a good thing that we can now test paternity. And it is quite affordable too. There are just too many scheming women out there to land a husband and would use any means to do so...including having a baby.

Low-tech? I wonder how accurate they are. I know of a similar case to that mentioned by Janie and he had to get a court order to finally determine the paternity. It turns out that he's not the daddy but still keeps and maintains the child.

If it's so important to you to know if you are the father of your child -- and maybe more importantly -- if your partner cheated on you, I think it might be important enough to get it done right and done well.

I'm not sure how expensive it is to do, but this question is a terribly important life changing one. How can you risk getting a wrong answer with a product that costs $19.99?

I would imagine with as common as DNA testing is these days the cost has come down to $20. Extracting DNA is not terribly hard, I've done it myself, although not as well as you'd have to for a paternity test. And its more reliable than the mother saying she hasn't slept with anyone else...

I didn't know paternity test were available over the counter now, I must have crawled from under a rock. That's good idea though. More women will be caught in their lies this way.

Well Chloe, I think men will be getting caught in lies, too, if they end up getting another woman pregnant and are confronted with evidence that it 'is' theirs. It takes two to tango, so depending on the situation, it could prove a man 'or' woman "guilty," so to speak....or innocent, for that matter.

Wow that is way too easy. That may be a good thing though.
