hemorrhage after childbirth

What do you know about the causes of hemorrhage after childbirth? This has happened to me and I lost so much blood I needed a blood transfusion and almost a hysterectomy. The doctor didn't really give me a "reason".

Here is a good explanation.
Once a baby is delivered, the uterus normally continues to contract (tightening of uterine muscles) and expels the placenta. After the placenta is delivered, these contractions help compress the bleeding vessels in the area where the placenta was attached. If the uterus does not contract strongly enough, called uterine atony, these blood vessels bleed freely and hemorrhage occurs. This is the most common cause of postpartum hemorrhage. If small pieces of the placenta remain attached, bleeding is also likely. It is estimated that as much as 600 ml (more than a quart) of blood flows through the placenta each minute in a full-term pregnancy.

You need to be firmer with your doctor if you want to know the exact cause of your hemorrhage. Doctors tend to tell us only what they want to and it takes us to take control by insisting on them explaining things.

I had a postpartum hemorrhage that was stopped by a quick shot of pitocin (so it was minor), I was told the uterus was not contracting strongly enough.

I have never had this but always did worry about it. I would be a little more stern with the doctor as well, if he or she can not answer your questions fully then you might want to look for a better doctor.

I've never heard of a 'hemorrhage' before.
What is this? From what you're saying it seems like some type of condition where you just lose a lot of blood.
It could be from having a baby. I'm sure there is some type of scientific explanation for this, but I'm not a scientist so I don't have the correct answer for you, but it probably has something to do with gaining so much weight from having a baby, maybe you're body couldn't handle it.
