Which reasons do you choose to be permanently "fixed". Is it always about which is cheaper, who can recover quicker? I have seen this debate among family members so what about the rest of you?

The operation for women is more intrusive. It's called Laparoscopic bilateral tubal ligation (LBTL) and she gets it under general anesthetic, the docs go inside the abdomen (with all the risks) in the hospital.
The man's operation is a vasectomy. It is under local anesthetic, no one goes inside the abdomen and it takes place in the doctor's office.
The tubal ligation is safer than it used to be, but it is still a big deal in the hospital. The vasectomy is relatively simple and safe in the doctor's office.
I'd vote for safe and simple every time.

We've decided that when we are done having kids, my husband will get the snip. I go through the pain of carrying and birthing the child, he can go through a couple days recovery from laser surgery!

We are having this discussion right now. I'm 5 months along and we have an 11-month-old at home. Obviously, better family planning would have prevented them being so close together! Since this is the last one, I want to make sure there are no more. I'd be willing to go under the knife to make this happen.

I don't understand why parents do this. The whole idea of these treatments sickens me..
Why not just use birth control? Surely birth control is a feasible option, no?

I understand what you are saying. I have two children and certainly dont want more, nor do I wish to continue taking the birth control pill, because of the long term effects it can have.
I am trying to convince my husband to have the snip, but he is not sure about it. I have had my fair share of the responsibility over the years.
