Too Expensive To Eat?
|
|
I was blown away the other day when I went to my greengrocer and saw that all of the fruits and vegetables were so terribly expensive.
The owner of the store and I had a long conversation about the prices. He says that he can't even buy produce to stock his shelves because he knows that his customers simply can't afford the high prices -- and he has made all his prices as low as he can. He says he might even go under if things don't get better.
It's mid summer and his store should be bursting with fresh summer fruits and veggies and I looked around and his store is just empty.
So what do you think? Are we all going to lose weight because we won't be able to afford good foods like vegetables and fruits of any type, fresh or frozen? Or are we all going to gain loads of unhealthy weight when all we can afford to eat will be the cheap, plentiful, processed foods that are filled with fat, salt and sugar?

It's crazy how expensive food is right now, and it all goes back to the rising cost of fuel. We have had to start buying more generic brand foods, using coupons, and shopping when the grocer is having buy one/get one sales.

Food prices have really soared in my area in recent months and I can tell you everyone is feeling the pinch. I know I am.

I can`t buy fresh fruit and veggies. I just can`t afford it. Stupid gas prices have affected everything. I have been buying frozen fruits and veggies but they are going up too. It may not make us thin or fatter but it sure is gonna make us more unhealthy.

Yes I fully believe that if prices keep rising, that many people will see an increase in weight from the lack of lower calorie, high nutrient foods.
The higher calorie stuff is way cheaper.

There are a good many small places like these going out of biz or soon will be. I dont even see many people anymore going to places without a ton of coupons to try and even it out.

I think Americans will definitely start packing on the pounds as we tighten our waistbelts at the supermarket. It amazes me that you can get macaroni and cheese for cheaper than the cost of an apple. One is better for you, but one is more filling and would feed more people. I understand why people make the choice they do!

We will either pack on the pounds and/or become nutrient deficient. We buy fruit that is canned from Aldi's, and try to buy it "light" or in juice, but sometimes that is not available. Our family eats one can a day when we have it. So far as vegetables...we buy canned veggies and we have planted a garden and I am afraid that is the only fresh veggies we will be having this year. But you know what...they are the best darn bell peppers I have ever had!

theer are some thing we can do, just think about it.
If youy live in a n area where you can have a garden, grow one! some of teh simplest easy to grow foods are tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, melons, radishes, squash. All can be grown in a large container too. theer really is no excuse not to at least try.
Another thing to consider is this, aside from rising fuel costs, mst farms are put our of business becaus eofthe suburban want for housing developments for larger more expensive homes.
Many small farms in my area have gone under ebcause someone wants that piece of property and there goes another local grower. having to import from one area to another because of lack of local space.
We grow alotfo our own items and that helps. we pick wild when the fruit is in season and freeze it.
Youc an plant blackberry vines and have fresh berries that provide notonly aprivacy hedge, but a food source. Instead of ugly cedar trees, plant fruit trees to your zone, like apples, pear and plums etc.
Think about what you have as far as space goes and work your own food source form there. you not only save a buyndle, but you can sell to neighbors what you have extra or learn to freeze and can.

For all the complaining about food prices my bill hasn't gone up much except in the meat department. Mac&cheese may be cheaper than apples, but have you seen the price these days 3/$2 was the "sale" last week at my favorite store. I can recall when it was 4/$1 or cheaper. Plus when you calculate the dairy (milk, butter) to finish it off, you've suddenly evened the playing field. Dairy products have been on an increase since last year or longer. Remember the ice cream price scare last year?

Actually, meat, milk and cheese are the same price at my local Sav-A-Lot tht they have been for a few months. Some things have gone up and yes, fresh fruit and vegetables are one of them. This week, I've noticed in my town, the price of gas has went down 9 to 10 cents, which is not good but it is better.

I dont think we will all loose weight because it seems the processed food in the freezer sections has not risen in price as steeply our fresh fruits and vegetables.
