Shower curatins

The use of plastic shower curtains are now in question. We have been using plastic shower curtains for as long as I can remember, but now they are discovering that the plastic may contain harmful substances.

I was always bothered by that new plastic smell. Sometimes it aggravated my asthma symptoms. Sometimes when I think of the amount of things that are killing us, it's no small wonder that we are still alive.

So what to do? Tinted glass? I don't doubt that these plastic curtains give off these harmful fumes, some people even like the new smell, much like the new car smell (I wonder if that's harmful too).

I've always opened them and hung them outside until the smell wore of a bit. We use a cloth outer curtain for prettiness and a clear plastic inner liner for keeping the water in. I'd imagine there is a difference in what kind of plastic liner as well. Some are really paper thin and cheap and some are much heavier. They even come in anti-microbial or what not which are seriously heavy plastic.

I heard on the news today, when they were talking about this, that there were many companies you can buy laminated cloth or even just cloth curtains that do not contain the high levels of chemicals (I think it was PCBs but now I wonder if it was BPA... can't remember). Ikea was listed as a safe vendor.

I have a shower curtain at home that is some type of cloth weave and it repels water and doesn't let it through. I've never smelled any chemical smell and it is washable. I think it has something to do with the way it is woven.

I hate new plastic smell too. But it would be pulled if it were that bad.
I have glass and I'll tell you know it is a pain in the butt to clean. The tracks get water and soap in the tracks and then mold grows. Its grose. I have to take the panels out and bleach the heck out of the tracks every other month. I wish i had a curtain!

Is it safe to use anything these days? Geesh it is getting harder and harder to find something that is safe and not riddled with warnings or being seen under the "new research discovers the harmful effects of" headings.

Oh brother. Whats next? How should we all keep ourselves safe? We have lived this long with no problems from this stuff. Where are they getting all this information from and what makes them even think to check a certain product anyway.
