PTSD in Lower Manhattan due to 9/11

A recent study commissioned by the NYC Health Department has found that over 12% of the residents living in the Lower Manhattan area of New York are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

PTSD is an anxiety disorderwhose symptoms may include nightmares, anger and depression.

I'm not surprised. I have a friend who lived in New Jersey (northern) and she's never been the same after 9/11. She could see the smoke rising on the horizon from her home and it deeply effected her. Living through it has got to be the worse thing we've had happen without going to war.

I think if they tested even further out that they would see close to the same results. That was a horrendous event that I do not think most people can just forget or feel the same after experiencing even if it was not first hand or at ground zero.

I agree that many people are still suffering from what happened that day. Anyone living and working in that area still can't forget what they saw and can't get over how the air smelled and looked during that time. All of NYC also feels the same way to varying degrees.

Many people who lived in lower Manhattan are still physically sick from what they took in through the air during that time. All of us who live in NYC still feel the pain of that day as a raw wound. It's different for each person, but anyone who was there can't forget. It's a nightmare we all keep inside our heads.

Every New Yorker who passes the place where the World Trade Center stood still can't help but pause for a second. We can't help it. Every person in Manhattan always looked at the WTC, it was a way of centering where you were. We still have that habit. But now, when we realize it's not there, we are a bit shaken again for a moment.

Though some of us didn't love its looks, we all felt as if the buildings were like our own big pet dinosaurs that we all knew in the neighborhood. We all felt as if it was OUR place where we'd sit, eat lunch, shop or go to listen to the music that played there in concerts all summer.

Even if we no longer talk about it, it's still like we all lost something dear to us. And when we permit ourselves to even think about those days, we can't help but feel depressed.

We all know someone who never really recovered. Some more than others, but all of us still are haunted by those days and what happened.

That was such an intense day that I still have little issues when I think about having seen it on TV!

I don't see how anyone who was on site couldn't have PTSD.

I makes me wonder how people who grow up in war zones deal with their trauma especially where no medications are available.

I have a friend who worked as a volunteer on the site and he has never been the same since. Other than being sick all the time from inhaling all that stuff, he has frequent recalls of things and events at the time. It was a difficult time and the fact that so many still suffer, is a reminder that the fight is not over.

I am realy not surprised at all by these findings. It was a stressful time for everyone, I cannot imagine what it must have been like to witness it all first hand.
