Pesticides in Produce

What effect does the use of pesticides have on produce? Is organically grown food actually healthier or is it just the latest trend? Do you use any kind of pesticide in your home garden or do you just hope your vegetables turn out ok? What do you do to prevent infestations?

Pesticides in produce have been a problem in recent years, but I have heard more growers are trying to get away from that though.

Organically grown produce is most definitely healthier for you since it lacks the chemicals that pesticides leave behind. The problem is, however, organic food is a lot more expensive and in todays economy that's not a good thing.

I think the fuss about pesticides is greatly overhyped in the media. Yes, there have been pesticides that have caused medical problems but look how many medications are later proven to cause problems? You can't worry about everything. Most produce will be perfectly safe if you wash it first.

I don't use pesticides in my garden but it is by no means organic since I use Miracle Gro (although the soil additives otherwise are organic).
I do have some issues with fruit pesticides making my mought feel funny, but I buy produce wash to help or prevent issues.

In many ways eating foods that do not have any pesticides on them just makes good sense. I have read about it a lot lately and am trying to go organic whenever I can. But as everyone has said here -- and as anyone who has gone shopping lately knows -- produce is just too expensive! And organic foods are very, very expensive in most stores.
In my readings it says that most of the pesticides with vegetables and fruit will only be found on the outside of the plants. If you do a good job of washing your veggies and fruits you will wash away most, or all, of the pesticides that contaminate them.
It has been suggested that using plain soap or bleach that has been diluted can be used to wash foods. But then again I read that no soap or bleach should ever be used because it too can be harmful. I read that you should only use soaps that have been made to be eaten will be safe for foods. If you do a search online you will find a few organic and safe soaps made to wash the pesticides off foods.
I have been using such a soap for a few months now and I love it. I get what I buy home from my greengrocer and wash everything right away. Then I cut all my veggies up into small boxes and they are ready to use for salads!
I wash my fruits off too but I then dry them off and then store them until they are eaten. Then just a fast water rinse is enough.
As long as your foods are clean and free from pesticides, then you are doing a lot for your health.

I'm all for organic produce but it is way too expensive. I have read that the residues left on our food from pesticide use is far less than many people in the organic food business would have us believe.

Well basically everything we eat nowadays has some kind of hormones pumped into them. It will take years to actually find out the REAL story behind pestisides and hormones being put into our foods.
