Subject: | Should They Be More Accountable? | |
Every time I see another news story on a food recall or FDA warning or new drug I wonder if they should be held more accountable for starting mass hysteria, encouraging people to ask about drugs they don't need or to start a fad diet that could be unsafe. Perhaps if we held them accountable for such things they would think twice before airing such information without thorough research. |

I don't think that food recalls are going over the top in making mass hysteria. When people get sick from a food that should be safe, then I agree that we all must be told about it. But I do wish that we had more of an idea on how to stop the foods from getting tainted and that there was a way to stop those specific foods from being sold. Because the media is warning us about tomatoes, I can see that I won't be able to get my hands on any kind of fresh tomatoes for years to come. If no one will buy it, then the green grocers will not get them in the stores. I do think that too many drugs are accepted as OK by the FDA, only to be found as deadly a few years later. And to see that a lot of these drugs are for weight loss or for cosmetic reasons makes people dying from them worse. But there is little we can do about it other than think twice before taking drugs we might not need. We all must be accountable first and ask all the questions you can before you agree to take any drug. I don't see how we can hold the media responsible for reporting news. We can only hold ourselves responsible for how we each react to it. |

I don't think they should be made more accountable. Every time that happens we get more laws preventing us from choosing what risks we are willing to accept, as adults. I am tired of being "protected" from myself because a regulatory agency or company is afraid that someone will blame them for a bad experience. |

I think the controls need to be put in place to stop these things from happening in the first place. Why do they need to wait until a few people get sick and die before a drug or food is investigated thoroughly? Proactive rules is what we need. |

I do believe that they should be made accountable. Their mandate is to protect the consumer and even though I agree that consumers need to be more responsible, I do not believe the average consumer has sufficient resources to do it on their own - and that's where agencies like the FDA come in. |

I think the controls that are in place need to better to stop things like this from happening, but sometimes it is hard to stop everything. |
