Subject: | Caffeine Before Breakfast May Increase Risk of Type 2 Diabetes | |
This is an amazing report. I never would have guessed that caffeine has any effect on blood sugars and to see that it seems to have such a large effect is absolutely amazing -- and a bit frightening too. Drinking caffeinated coffee before eating low-sugar cereal at breakfast may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes in some people, according to researchers at the University of Guelph in Canada. They had male volunteers drink caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee one hour before they ate cereals with low or moderate levels of sugar, United Press International reported. Among those who ate the low-sugar cereal, blood sugar levels jumped 250 percent higher after they had caffeinated coffee, compared to when they had decaffeinated coffee. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. "Caffeine interferes with our body's response to insulin. It makes us resistant to insulin which in turn makes our blood-sugar levels go higher," said researcher Terry Graham, UPI reported. People at risk for type 2 diabetes should be cautious and consider drinking decaffeinated coffee, Graham suggested. WOW! |

I would have never thought that coffee would have such a drastic effect on blood sugar. If one cup of coffee has that type of effect, imagine how hard energy drinks are on your body. |

There are several diabetics in my family and all were told to avoid caffeine so I knew it had some sort of effect. I'm the opposite since I'm hypoglycemic so maybe the coffee is what's keeping me going? LOL - seriously, coffee IS my breakfast most of the time. |

Jackie, you and I have one thing in common, coffee for breakfast. I also have coffee throughout the day though. Which I am sure is probably not good for me. As for the related study above mentioned, although I didn't know it to start with, it does make sense to me. Cereal with SUGAR and then CAFFEINE--both are stimulants. I have an interesting topic related to the caffeine based on a true encounter I am going to write, right after I am done here. It is in conjunction with the drug RITALIN. |

I am going to rethink the Redbull that I have as a kick start to some of my mornings. It could be the unhealthiness of my habits, as there is a large amount of caffeine, but it has become popularized by the results that are immediately shown, maybe its all in my head? |
