Subject: Insomnia

Anyone have any good techniques for overcoming insomnia. I had a lot of trouble when I was younger and it has gotten a lot better. Still sometimes my mind gets working away and I can't get it to slow down so I can go to sleep. I stay away from coffee because the caffeine really gets me wired. Alcohol in small quantities also acts as a stimulant with me. I'm sure I'd sleep if I got rip roaring drunk but I don't think my wife would appreciate or put up with it.

A hot bubble bath does it for me. I soak in the tub till the water is tepid and then drink a little herbal tea and go to bed. Knocks me out every time.

If you want a drug recommendation, my husband and I love Ambien. It works great and we don't have to take it every night. We also like drinking chamomile tea or a tea that I get from the herbal store called sleeptime tea. It may not sound very manly, but we both find that either choice is relaxing. I also find, reading a boring book puts me to sleep.

I have always heard that chamomile is good but I have issues with certain teas (I get massive headaches, sweeten or not). Is this much different than the rest, chamomile that is.

Most times I just pass out from being so tired I just can not take it anymore, I hate it myself, but what else can I do?

When I'm really, really having trouble sleeping, I'll take a couple of Benedryl. Knocks me out every time, but it's not something I like using regularly, because it makes me feel so worn out. Also, as others have mentioned, a hot bath and a cup of tea are great to get to sleep.

My husband works a swing shift and has difficulty sleeping. So, he takes Melatonin and it really seems to help. You can find it with the vitamins. Apparently, it is a naturally occurring chemical that produces the sleep hormone in the brain.
