Subject: High blood pressure and not taking meds right

My husband has high blood pressure. He takes his meds until his blood pressure is good then stops taking them. He has a blood pressure monitor he uses. Can`t this be dangerous? He should know better because he was a medic in the navy for 10 years.

Certainly it is dangerous in that he is putting an unneeded stress on his heart and body when his blood pressure rises above normal, and whilst waiting for his meds to reach effective levels again and be working properly. Unfortunately some people just refuse to comply with instructions properly.

What does he say about it? That he doesn't want to be on meds his whole life? Is he actively changing his diet to see if he can go off the meds?

I'd personally rather take a pill everyday than knock 15 years off my life.

The fact that he has to go back to the meds eventually means that he needs to stay on them. Of course he should go the diet route and exercise, but stay on the meds until the programme is working well.

I had an aunt who decided that one weekend she wanted to clean out her system from all the medications that she was taking. That included her blood pressure medications.

She had a stroke that weekend.

I know that your husband has a blood pressure machine so he can get an idea of how high it is, I think it's still too dangerous to take such chances with his health. His blood pressure might just shoot up without his knowing about it at any time.

If he really wants to stop taking his medication, he might do better to work hard on getting his blood pressure lower by diet and exercise. Then as his doctor lets him take less and less of the medications in a safe way, he might very well be able to totally stop taking the medication one day.

I used to be on hypertension drugs, but I lost weight and now I don't need any pills any more. It can be done -- safely.

i had high blood pressure and was on an ACE inhibitor and diuretic.

i came off of them when they stopped working.

I know that many people with HBPO know when the meds are wrong. diet and exercise and stres reduction help.

Calms forte helps me. it keeps me calm and lowers my BP. insytead of taking other meds.

Of course it's dangerous. Medicines are supposed to be taken the way they are prescribed. I'm sure his can't say- only take until you feel better.

I would tell him to take them again- and then ask the doctor the next time if it's ok to stop after feeling better.

Yes this really would be dangerous because my dad would do the same thing and he would get random strokes then we would have to send him to emergency. :[
