Spot Reducing
|
|
The old discussion is going on with a friend.
He swears that with the abdominal exercise machine he just bought, that he will be able to spot reduce his stomach and abs and will so have a flat stomach soon, as he works out.
I tell him that there is no such thing as a spot reduction and that, if you lose weight, you lose it all over and some might be from the tummy area. I say his machine might help build his abs and as a man he might lose a good amount of weight faster than I can, but exercise won't make his abs really noticeable because of the layer of fat over it. The machine won't break up that fat just because he "goes for the burn."
In your opinion, is there such a thing as spot reducing?

You are exactly right. It may actually make his waistline grow because the muscles underneath the fat will grow larger, and even though he has gained quality muscle, it will appear as though he has packed on some extra pounds. The only way to six pack abs is a good diet and aerobic exercise.

I thought doing abs was a sure way to get a flat stomach, that what we see on tv and the excercise videos. I know you still have to work on the overall body, but I too believe in spot reduction.

I think maybe they are getting reduction and toning confused. If you use a certain group of muscles you can tone but any weight that comes off will come off from everywhere. To lose weight you need to burn excess calories and they are all over our body and not just in the abs.

Toning and reduction are two different things. I can have a toned and rock solid stomach, but I can still have a layer of fat over those muscles. This may give the illusion that you can just work off fat in one section of the body which is incorrect.

Yes, I believe in spot reduction, as long as your friend keeps up with the exercises he should be able to develop and maintain an improved stomach area.
