Xanax compared to ProZac?
|
|
I was wondering what the differences between Xanax and Prozac medications are.
I have two friends - diagnosed with depression - that are differently prescribed to these medications.
I'm wondering the difference between the two. Both their depression seems to be the same described by the doctors - from what they tell me.

I am not 100% sure but I think both are very comparable to one another. I think the main difference is that Prozac is time released. Anyone else know?

What I remember and could find is Prozac is an SSRI which basically means it increases seratonin or the availability thereof in the brain and Xanax is used to decrease what is referred to as abnormal excitement in the brain. I took care of an elderly lady who used both at different times through the course or her treatment.

Prozac is an antio depressant. It works by allowing serotonin levels to be balanced out and forcibly secreted in the levated amounts. Xanax is an anti anxiety drug. It surpresses andrenalin and keeps a person calm so they can sort things out instead of panicking.
Xanax is a tranquilizer in essence.
so these two drugs are very different in action and chemical makeup and work totally differently.

I remember a doctor telling me that Xanax is addictive, but then ANYTHING that makes you feel better can be addictive. This includes foods, natural remedies....anything.
When you want to stop taking Prozac you are supposed to wean off. I am sure doctors would like to monitor your state of mind during this time, but to stop taking an addictive substance, you should wean off as well.

Some doctors use anti anxiety meds like Xanax for depression and others use anti depressants. My doctor has me on Zoloft an anti depressant and Valium an anti axiety med. Xanax didn`t work for me. Different drugs work different for poeple. The doctor has to find the right one or the right combination for each person.
