Unusual medication effects
|
|
Does anyone else have odd reactions to meds that no one else does? Not weird side effects, so much, but certain meds not being as effective or others that are over-effective? Like in my case, I seem to have a huge tolerance to novocaine. My dentist has to use three times the normal amount to actually numb a tooth. On the other hand, a percoset (just one) puts me floating on a cloud.

I have that problem with novacaine also. I need twice as much as he normally uses. My Dentist said some people are like that.

I have that with allergy medication. I think I have been taking it for so long my body has built up a tolerance for it and so it is no longer as effective as it used to be.

I would say you need a new dentist. If one to two shots doesn't work he needs to switch the drug and use another instead. I had a novacaine problem as well and was switched to something else (I wish I could remember) and it worked great. I had them annotate it in my record so now that is all I get.

Well with the numbing of the tooth, a lot of people are like that. It can be hard to make your mouth numb, with all the liquid in there. I have 8 cavities right now but cannot get them filled for over a month, but 2 of them hurt so I put Orajel on them to temporarily stop the pain, but it doesn't work at all. The liquid drains it away almost.
As far as the percocet goes, it can be because of how high of a doceage you're taking. There are many types of percocet, some being MUCH stronger than others.

Sometimes body weight plays a big role in tolerance too. Sometimes not though. Tylenol 3's with Codeine do absolutely nothing for me but a regular Aleve takes away my pain completely. As for novacaine I do not require a lot though mt dentist seems to think otherwise :-)

Your resistance to the pain meds your dentist uses, might not be due to the medication, but the way the dentist injects it.
Novocaine and xylocaine work better if the dentist injects them into the Vagus nerve, I think that is the right name, and numbs the whole side of your face.
I have yet to experience any solid pain relief when the medications are only injected around the tooth being worked on.
How is your dentist injecting the pain medication?
