Pill Or Food? Which Is Better?
|
|
I heard the report yesterday that apple pectin and apple juice can kill colon cancer cells! So it can help stop the cells from growing and moving around the body.
Right away I looked at my favorite vitamin store to see if they had it. They do and I was going to buy it for my sister (she has metastasized colon cancer)no matter the cost. But my sister -- ever the one to refuse to spend money on herself (even in her condition) insisted that we look to see if we could make it ourselves. She found a recipe online and I bought apples this morning and I will start making apple pectin in a few minutes.
But I wonder if we are doing the best thing. The store bought capsules can tell us exactly how much apple pectin we are getting, but I think that the natural form of it from food might be better for the body to use, but we won't know how much of it we are getting.
Should I still buy the pills or is the food better? Any thoughts?

I don't think there is any problem with making your own apple pectin, the process has been around for years and is all natural. However I would seek out a professional and find out how much is recommended for your situation. Keep in mind that ripe apples contain less pectin, but the level varies greatly from one tree to the next; some varieties are suitable when ripe, while some have virtually no pectin by that time.
If you want to assure you are getting the exact amount of pectin you need, I would go with the pills.

I agree with wills, I would find out the exact dosage you need per day and just buy the pills. That way you know exactly how much and what you are getting. If you do it yourself you may not be getting enough pectin from the apples, then all your work would be in vain.

I believe getting what you need straight from the food itself is better. I'm sure there is a way to find out what you get from the pills and then figure out how that equals out to making your own.

I'm curious as to why a person couldn't just eat apples daily instead of making the pectin. I sure wish your sister the best. I also have a sister who had colon cancer. Fortunately they were able to remove the entire tumor and she is now cancer free.

I think I will also get the pills though I have made a nice pot of apple pectin/applesauce. Having the natural food while getting a good dose of it in pills too might be a good thing.
There isn't a dosage suggested to use yet. They are still doing tests, but as the product is a natural form of food that people have been eating for centuries (it's used to make jam and jellies) I don't see any setback to having both. It's a good form of fiber and that's good for everyone anyway.
Ozzie, I am so happy for you and your sister. I wish I can say that my sister's outlook is good, but the doctors say differently. We are just going to do the best we can for as long as we can and hope for the best.

As long as it's not possible to get 'too much' of the pectin, then I think getting both the pills and making it yourself are good ideas. That way you're getting the fresh apple results, but are still able to know exactly how much you're getting from the pills. Good luck.

There is more and more proof these days that eating the right foods in correct proportions is the way to go. However, it doesn't work overnight. It really has to become a way of life.

This has always made me wonder as well. It seems with pills you can see exactly what your taking but what about the nature way. Its a 50-50 kind of thing.

I would think pills would be most convenient and easiest; you wouldn't have to eat anything or chew. :P
Are there any available on the market? I've never heard of it.
