Institutional bullying in healthcare

I was reading an article about bullies in the healthcare field and how it affects patient outcomes, and job satisfaction and turnover among health care workers.

It sounds like a real problem, these people, I'm sure it's a small percentage, need to act their age and stop abusing positions of power.

I'm not really surprised it occurs in virtually every work place. It is sad that it is tolerated. It is encouraging that there are efforts to do something about it. I hope that it doesn't stop with the health care profession.

I've dealt with a doctor who was a condescending know it all. He wasn't old either. I would really like to see that kind of stuff eliminated from the medical profession. I have no doubt that it has a negative impact on patient outcomes.

I agree with Philbo in that this type of thing can be found in most professions however it is more disturbing in the medical field - especially if patients are being the victims. Doctors would stop being this way, at least with patients, if we stopped tolerating it. I have switched doctors when they are condescending or bullying in any way.

I read a report that was full of ridiculously rude Doctor comments and it was completely disgusting to hear the things they said as if all patients were a nuisance. No wonder so many people die at the hands of Dr.'s these days they can not be bothered to listen for fear their gut instinct may to questioned.

Doctors are often allowed to develop a sense of entitlement that should be made illegal. What's worse is that people put up with it!

Unfortunately I think bullying can occur in any profession, but it is a shame that it has such a profound impact on our healthcare and its workers.
