States requiring health insurance?

I live in Massachusetts and this past year, state lawmakers passed a law requiring people to have health insurance. There are hefty penalties on your state tax returns if you don't have it. There are exceptions for those who absolutely cannot afford it but most of us have to have insurance. I'm just wondering if any other states are doing this as well?

I believe this is similar to the system that Obama and Clinton are trying to install. The idea of insurance for everyone is great, but penalizing those on the cusp that can barely afford it would be kicking Americans while they are down. Last time I checked, America still has freedom of choice, and if I don't want insurance because I’m young, dumb, and feel invincible, I think that is my choice.

If they want everyone to have health coverage, why don't they just opt for a universal healthcare system?

Yeah I agree ewills. How can we be forced to have insurance if we can`t afford it? That makes no sense to me.
