Paying for preventative care

Is paying for preventative care a good idea? Does it really save money in the long term or does it increase costs for the insurance provider?

In my opinion it does save money in the long run. If you can take a test and find that you have any disease that's in a very early stage, then steps can be taken to help to stop the disease from doing as much damage as it could have done.
If you find a blockage in the heart and take care of it, that will stop a full fledged heart attack from coming that will do massive damage to the heart muscle. Once the heart attack hits, if you survive it, it is many years of problems and medications and loss of working time ahead of the patient.
If you catch cancer early then all you need do is cut the cancer out and give one kind of chemo for a while to make sure all the cancer cells were killed. But if the cancer is advanced, then it means a myriad of medicines, operations and difficulties in the quality of life, not to mention that life itself is cut short.
In my opinion, preventative medicine is well worth the money.
The old saying, "A stitch in time, saves nine," makes sense with medicine too.

Prevenative care is definitely a good idea. Like skatss said, if you catch a problem early you can stop or prevent it from worsening. If you put off prevenative care, your potential health problem will grow, and cost much more to take care of down the road, not to mention deteriorate your health.

I agree with you both, but the devil's advocate in me wants to say that preventative health care just encourages the amount of money that is spent.

I think it is definitely worth it to have preventive care. I also think that if insurance companies listened to what the Drs say instead of making us go through a bunch of tests BEFORE the one the Dr wants to give you just to check a box is crazy. If I have a knee problem I MUST have an Xray before an MRI even though an MRI has to be done to get a good picture. There is no common sense!

The old saying goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". My father died of colon cancer 25 years ago. He was 67 at the time. Because of this history, my family doctor ordered my first colonoscopy when I was only 40 and my next one when I turned 47. I will turn 49 this year. I promised my wife and kids that I will be proactive and do everything I can to prevent this killer disease from taking my life.
