Health Insurance Companies Charging As a Punishment

The other day I read a story where a woman who is a nurse, was diagnosed with diabetes but she refuses to do anything to help herself control the disease.

She is suffering with a lot of the ills that uncontrolled diabetes can do to the body: Her feet gets pins and needles and she is in pain when she walks, she's out of breath easily, she feels sick and tired a lot of the time. But for some reason she just won't follow her doctor's directions and check her blood sugar many times a day and she doesn't stick to any diet to keep her numbers down or to try and get rid of some of her extra pounds. And she is a nurse who has seen what diabetes can do to a person.

Her friend wrote the post and said that the woman's health insurance carrier is now charging her an extra $50 a month until she shows that she's checking her blood sugar numbers and sticking to a diet. It is afraid that she will get sicker and then cost them even more. This friend applauded the penalty and said she hoped the added expense would wake her friend up.

What do you think of an insurance company charging you more if your health control is poor?

Personally, I think that the health insurance company would save more money in the long run if they insisted that the woman go and get help to find out why she's killing herself little by little. If she could understand why she's refusing to cooperate with her doctor she might then be able to do what needs to be done to get healthy. That would save money and save her life in the long run.

I think the woman is lucky that the insurance company doesn't drop her or that the extra fee isn't a lot higher. While I agree that she should probably seek some sort of psychological help, I don't think that the insurance company could insist on that.
