Having unnecessary tests done just to put a check in the box.

I've had back and knee problems most of my adult life and have had surgery on one knee and my back. Talking to the specialists about it they wanted to do an MRI each time to make sure they got a clear picture before the surgery. In both cases I couldn't get an MRI approved by insurance until I had an Xray done. This was a totally unnecessary exposure to radiation for me but the only way I could get the test I need. When will the insurance companies realize that they aren't saving any money but wasting it by doing these?

This has been one thing that drives me crazy about insurance companies. It is the same with medications. They Dr has to give you a medication that is covered by the insurance and that has to not work before you can finally end up on something that does. I know that there are people out there trying to screw the insurance companies and it stinks that we all have to pay.

In this case It wasnt un nessecery. An Xray gives what is called a target picture fo the area. This is used as a base to make sure teh MRI reads what teh area is and surounding areas. AAn MRI was not dssigned to replace Xrays but to enhance the effectiveness of having one done. So have one or two done is nto so bad. BTW the magnetic resoonence of and MRI can also mess with those with a high Iron or copper count.
There is danger not matter what procedure you choose to have.
even going outside for hours exposes you to immense radisation.. where do you think sunburn comes from.. mild radiation posiioning.....

I agree not only that x-rays have their place, but that there is a chance in some cases that they will not need to proceed to MRI. For that reason insurance companies demand them because over all they do save money this way.

I agree that insurance companies know more ways to waste money than anything else.

Unfortunately you need to be helped and they have their rules. At least you can feel better knowing that they approved the tests you did need and you weren't given a "no" just because they felt like it. When you think of the cost of MRIs you can fall into a full faint.

I hope you get the help that you need. It's hell having pain with every step you take.

Yes, MRIs are one of the most expensive tests out there! While I normally get annoyed with insurance telling doctors how to practice medicine, this is one of those cases when it saves money and time to make sure the machine is directed correctly.
