Diabetes Penalties

A friend at work has been hit with a surcharge for her insurance similar to the smokers that someone else mentioned. However in her case, I wonder how fair this is.

The charge is not based on refusal to quit smoking like with smokers-which let's face it is a voluntary activity. It's based on having a HbA1C that has been too high for so many tests in a row. So she now has to pay $50 a month extra for a condition that she really wouldn't have if she could control it in the first place. The fact that she can't control her HbA1C is because of her diabetes-and not helped by an antidepressant she was recently prescribed that raises blood sugar.

She's appealing-but do you think that this is fair? I don't think it's a by choice situation like smoking.

It's not at all fair. Sometimes, no matter what you do, you can't get your diabetes under control. To penalize her for something she can't control, no matter how she tries, then that's just a half step away from penalizing anyone for getting sick in the first place.

The insurance companies could say that it is your fault for getting diabetes in the first place, getting cancer, getting a heart attack in the first place and not healing right away, then can say that they won't pay you for the medical help you need or penalizing you because your life wasn't healthy enough to stop all diseases from getting to you. Making her pay for something she can't control is wrong.

I hope she does appeal. I hope she wins too.

I personally think it's unfair. That is what health insurance is for, to help those who cannot afford to spend so much when they need it. It's not fair that they should penalize someone who has little or no control over their situation.
