Probiotics

We have known for sometime that yogurt is good for you, but now we are seeing all these "specially formulated" yogurts, with special probiotics for digestive regularity, and immunity, and what not.
Are some of these better for you than others? Or is it all a scam to get you to eat certain yogurts, and they all have the naturally occuring probiotics that you need?

Not all yogurts are the same. The ones with lots of added sugars don't do as well as others in keeping your gut filled with good bacteria. Some yogurts kill off the good bacteria in their cooking process.
Look for the yogurts that have: Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, L. reuteri and Bifidobacterium bifidum in them. They might be added to enhance the health-promoting potential of yogurt or occur naturally.
These "probiotic" bacteria pass through the stomach to the gastrointestinal tract. There, they help maintain a healthy balance between the 200-plus kinds of bacteria that live there.

I've taken acidophilus supplements since I was a teenager on and off. While all yogurt has cultures usually some do have different and better cultures. The new Activia by Dannon really works quite well.

A very large amount of the bacteria and viruses that we encounter are introduced to the body through the gut. So yes it makes the world of sense that having a healthy gut flora would help strengthen your immune system.

I had come to the conclusion some years ago when I read the ingredients of yogurt that I bought, that some of them are just pure rubbish and does not deserve to be eaten especially by a health conscious person.

I agree with DanaS I can easily see how finding the right brand could really be beneficial but in response to the original question there are definitely some brands that are better than others. Not all brands carry the same amoutn of ingredients either.
