Measles on the loose

Appoximately 64 cases of measles have been reported in the USA, They believe this is due to imports from the eastern countries. People who have not been vaccinated are mostly at risk.

The vaccine isn't exactly wonderfully successful, and tends to wear off my adulthood. So I think it is more fair to say that all people are at risk unless they have had a natural case of the measles.

I recently read a post from a woman who lives in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona where they are having an outbreak of measles. She is 55 and the worst news -- she just came down with measles.

I have to add that she has had it a few times already, so she is like me, I also have had it three times -- as a kid. We are the people who just don't get full immunity, but most people are safe from it after they get their shot.

My friends all had their shots as kids and are fine, but their children, who are having kids now, are weary of immunization shots.

I can understand that, but with measles, that shot has been around working safely for decades. All in all getting your children immunized safer than having them get measles.

I agree with you skatss. It is better to do what you can to protect your children. One would think it would be worse for a small child to get measles than a grown man or woman.

I think it definitely is worse for children than adults to have this disease because we are aware of the things we should or should not do and why. Whereas a child does not understand why he cannot scratch when he itches.

On the contrary. Measles is more serious for adults who more frequently suffer severe complications. You should read the CDC pink book regarding the disease before fearing it in your children. Children are the ones most likely to just shrug it off.

And as Rosetta said, the shot wears off. This is why boosters are now needed so frequently-remember this used to be a one shot job. It's now one at 15 months, one at 5 years, one at 18 to go to college, and I believe they are talking about a booster for around the sixth grade.

So unless you get birth to grave shots, the most vulnerable-those most likely to suffer severe complications-are the ones left at risk of the disease when it wears off.

Yeah, I was given an second booster when I went to college. I couldn't register with out it.

My children are not vaccinated for it, and frankly, I hope they get a wild case. If they don't get it by the time they're in their late teens, I'll get them the shot.

I think I got vaccinated for measles when I was little, I don't really remember. I think you have to. They should check foreigners for diseases like that before letting them in US, it's insane.
