Google launches health services

The internet search giant Google Inc. has finally launched its long-awaited Google Health (google.com/health), a product that will enable users to upload and store medical records from many sources and get relevant health information.

The announcement, made on Monday, expands upon Google’s initial notice in February, according to which the company had teamed up with the Cleveland Clinic to test the service with about 10,000 patients who already use the hospital’s online health records system.

According to Marissa Mayer, a Google vice president, patients can upload medical records from organizations, enter their own data and create their own profile, search for viable information on health conditions or ask for a second opinion on their diagnosis.

I've read about this service a while ago and I am still not sure that I want my medical records and history to be put online. Somehow it seems too easy for some miscreants somewhere to break into any site and get all your information. I especially don't want my medical details to be someplace that can be broken into and read by anyone.

When it comes to health care I still think you need a doctor, or a specific person who you know and who will listen to you in order to get any real help. Just having another place to put your personal information doesn't mean you will get good advice or information that will help you in the best way.

I agree it is a little disconcerting having your information accessible to some online hack. I can see some pros with it as well. It would have been nice to have had copies of my kids vaccinations available the Office they use to go to switched from paper files to computerized and somehow all the kids' vaccine paperwork got lost in the switchover.

No, I really don't like this! Google has in the past been issued court summons to hand over it's information-what happens when they have all your health information too?! It's bad enough just your browsing history.

I didn't like the idea of this at first but then I got thinking, most hospitals and some doctors already use software and databases to store health information...what's to stop them from getting hacked too? I do think getting a second opinion online is foolish though. A doctor can't just go by the test results, there should be an exam, too.

I would like to know if we a choice in our medical records being accessed from the google. I totally agree with the point about google being summoned to hand over records.

I do not know if I would want medical records online. Seems to many bad things could happen to the records and they could be misused.

That is very true. Next thing you know you are logged as having some sort of crazy communicable disease or someone is using your information to access benefits or gosh only knows what else.
