Get Walking!

It's getting warm out and the sun is out much later now. We all need to get walking, but we need to walk properly, in proper form to prevent injury.

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons offers these suggestions for a good walk:

Swing your arms as you walk.
Walk with your head up, and make sure your back is straight.
Keep your abdomen flat.
Point your toes straight ahead.
Walk with a long, easy stride that doesn't strain you.

The last suggestion is the best one. On the first day don't overdo it. If you wake up after your first day of walking with blisters and sore feet you probably won't have a second day of walking.

Take it slow and be kind to yourself. Also, get a walking tape so you can get to know how fast you are going, and get a pedometer. They aren't expensive and it's a kick to know how far you have walked.

Now let's get walking!

I totally agree that walking is one of the best forms of exercise. Because of the cold weather in Utah, I started walking on my treadmill earlier this year. I'm currently up to 60 minutes a day on the treadmill, 5 days a week, with a maximum speed of 3 miles per hour. The main benefit for me on the treadmill is that I have to keep a constant speed and because I'm indoors, my allergies don't affect me. Also, I get to watch the movie of my choice when I walk.

I love walking. It is a great stress releaser for me after a hard day a work. All you need is a good pair of walking shoes.

I try to walk every day when the weather is nice. It not only is good exercise, walking around the neighborhood has helped me meet the neighbors and develop several friendships.

I love to walk. Jogging is not my forte but a brisk 45 minute walk each evening does get me pumped up. I love the treadmill too as I can monitor myself better.

I am not that particular about pedometers and posture. But, I love walking. I am not a regular though because of my busy lifestyle. And I end up spending a lot of time gardening, which is also a great exercise. I love taking the dog for a walk. That's mixing pleasure with business, don't you think so?

Don't forget your water when you walk. As the days get warmer it is more important to stay hydrated. I am getting ready to start walking again but that "keep abdomen flat" part won't be happening for a while.

I try to walk where ever I can and even park further away from places so I can get a good walk to the store I am going to if I am store hopping that day. The only bad part is when it rains when Im inside and dont realize it til Im leaving. :) I cant really walk around my neighborhood too much, so parks are good for me too.
