The Final Word On Deadly Tomatoes

The final word is -- it wasn't the tomatoes that were dangerous!! U.S. health officials announced Friday that it had been tainted jalapeno peppers, and they have been definitively traced to a farm in Mexico.

Added to the story -- The Food and Drug Administration gave the all-clear to jalapeno and serrano peppers grown in the United States, but warned consumers to avoid any raw jalapenos or serranos grown in Mexico or the foods made from them. So before you buy the peppers or eat them in a dish, you need to find out where it was grown.

Good Luck.

1,294 people in the United States and Canada were made ill from the bacteria this time. And I suppose we can now eat tomatoes which had been suspected as the source since the outbreak started in April.

I can't tell you how angry I am at this sloppy work. Tomato growers all through the US have been terribly hurt by the original reports that tomatoes were the reason for people getting ill.

I haven't had a tomato in months, and now I can't have tomatoes because they are too darned expensive to buy!

I hope this is the last time that incorrect reports are made so publicly known.

If I can get a loan from my bank, I'm going to have a tomato sandwich this weekend. I only hope that the lettuce I have with it isn't tainted with salmonella.

Yeah, good luck with that sandwich! I took to growing my own tomatoes, and just washed any store bought ones. I'm not a great deal afraid of food in this way.

I'm glad though that they figured out where it was coming from so the issue can be handled.

I'm glad to hear that they finally found the answer to what was causing the outbreak. I do agree with you, though, that the tomato growers have been severely hurt by all of this. Hopefully not to the point of devastation, though.

I love the post- and I agree 100%. I read this too and was shocked and outraged.
Why were they so wrong?
I feel for the tomato farmers- they have lost a lot of money on this mistake.
I still bought tomatoes- but only locally grown and they were expensive.
My garden is full of tomatoes right now- none ripe yet- I'll soon be eating those tomato sandwiches.
