Suntan lotion ratings
|
|
Can somebody tell me why after nearly one whole year, the FDA still cannot decide on adequate rating scheme for suntan lotions? From last summer they decided on a 4-star rating system and it's summer again and the proposed system is STILL not ready.

I guess it's just the way the wheels of bureacracy turns. I never saw anything wrong with the traditional SPF guide. Now if/when this star rating hits the road, consumers will have a new thing to get accustomed to.

No kidding. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the current ratings system. The FDA drags their feet on everything.

That makes me want to avoid the sun more than I normaly do. I burn real easy and I dont have the fairest of skin, very odd. I hope they figure out what they are doing soon.

I've never really put much stock in the spfs either. So not getting the new ratings on time isn't breaking my heart. I'd rather just wear protective clothes and reapply frequently.

I'm in Canada and I haven't heard anything about the system changing here.
I'm pretty comfortable with the SPF system. I just go for a high number and we also keep an eye on the best before dates.

The problem with the traditional SPF rating system is that it is based on protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburns. Under the new system, the FDA would require sunscreen makers to rate protection against both UVB and UVA rays, the type that cause suntans. Both kinds of rays cause skin damage and skin cancer.
I wonder why the original ratings didn't include all the dangerous rays that can harm the skin. It's taking more time because the manufactures have to do their own tests and then the FDA has to check on the tests.
And I suppose the FDA thinks that high numbers meaning safety is too difficult a concept for the public to understand and the FDA thinks that a four star rating is just about all we can take in.
Right. We can understand that the FDA is making more work for itself even when they can't do what is required of them right now.
So we all will continue to do what we did before, those of us who burn will try the high SPA rated suntan lotions and the people who don't care one bit about burning will do without any lotion at all.

I don't have an answer for you, but I did see a commercial the other day about a new suntan lotion that is supposed to protect skin from other UV rays from the sun that no other suntan lotion does. I forget what it was called, I'm definitely going to try and get it if it's not too expensive, I want nice skin my whole life. If anyone else sees this commercial before I can get back and tell you what it's called, please let me know :)
