Now it's jalapenos...
|
|
A single jalapeno pepper was recently found with a the same strain of salmonella which caused a serious food poisoning outbreak in the US. The pepper which originated on a Mexican farm was found at produce processing facility in Texas. The new warning...don't eat fresh jalapenos.

I'm not sure that they will ever truly figure out what is the cause of this outbreak. I think that it will ultimately end of its own accord perhaps without being traced back to the original source.
The question is, if it's the peppers then how does it relate to the tomatoes?

Aren't there a lot of vegetables coming from Texas and Mexico that have been found with salmonella?

No, they feel that it is definitively peppers now. Because they have actually found it on the peppers, not as before, where they were just correlating the incidence with foods eaten.

It's getting to the point where I am starting to think that it's not safe to have any raw and fresh vegetables. If the government keeps sending out warnings about all the great vegetables we eat, then it's going to be hard to trust eating anything raw.
And if the prices of vegetables go any higher, I am beginning to think that no one is going to stand to pay good money for any foods that might also make them sick.
I guess I'll make it a point to wash all my produce with hot water and soap and then submerge it in cold water to crisp them again, to try and make them safer to eat.
I hope that helps.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. washing them very good. I have even thought of growing my own. I have a very bad back so I have to come up with a way to have a garden I can tend without bending and walking a lot. I thought of potted plants. I need to ask at the nurseries what veggies I can grow in pots.
