FDA seeks black box warning for Cipro and Levaquin

Anyone currently taking Bayer AG's Cipro and Johnson & Johnson's Levaquin may want to check out this article released today on CNN. According to the article, this black box warning is coming six months after after the consumer group Public Citizen sued the FDA to require the agency to add black-box warnings to the drugs.

For those of you who don't know what a black box warning is, it is the strongest warning dealt out by the FDA, requiring the drug to have a black box on the medicine disclosing all possible side effects. It also requires drug makers to state all possible side effects in the commercials.

It is amazing how long the drugs get to stay on the market before a warning like this shows up. If the drugs are truly this dangerous, they should not have gotten FDA approval without this warning attached to it in the first place.

This makes you really wonder how serious the FDA is about making sure medications are safe. It's sad that a group had to take the action necessary to get these people to do their job.
