Subject: | Will you risk eating barbecued foods? | |
A couple of years ago a study came out saying that much of the charred meat that people look forward to during the summer months, could or did contain known carcinogens. With this in mind, have you continued to eat barbecued meats? |

I think that eating such meats is fine if they are cooked properly. You can wrap meats in foil so that they do not get charred, and whilst I realise that this reduces the pleasure for many, I won't take that risk. |

It's funny, just this morning I read an article that listed the dangerous foods that will give you colon cancer. My sister has metastasized colon cancer and we're still trying to figure out how she got it. The article had a large section telling all about the dangers of eating red meat and drinking alcohol together. It seems that having these two foods together will give you colon cancer. The problem is that my sister hasn't eaten much read meat in the last ten years and she has never done any drinking. She just doesn't like much red meat and my whole family doesn't drink. We all feel sick from alcohol and just never picked up the habit of drinking anything alcoholic at all. So another theory about foods that will kill you doesn't help. The only thing my sister did that they said brought up the danger of colon cancer was to carry around some excess weight. But in that she had just lost lot of weight when the cancer was discovered, well that doesn't help us either. But then again, that as a reason for her colon cancer goes out the window when we remembered that a cousin of ours, who was a vegetarian and never had an extra ounce of fat on her thin body, just died of colon cancer last year, at the age of fifty-seven. So, as usual in my long winded way, I wouldn't put any trust in any article or study that tells me one food is going to kill me. If you get some pleasure in eating charred meat a few times a year, I figure that the pleasure you get out of it will help your overall health, so go ahead and eat. Just don't do it every week. |

I cook out all the time and will never stop doing it and eating the food. I think the risk is higher with charcoal than propane or you'd see the same warning when using a gas over. I personally think if the food is cooked properly and with the proper care that there really isn't much danger. Chris |

Risk it? I can't go without my BBQ. I love meat cooked outdoors and cook all year round. I cook in any weather and would not give up my grill for anything. Food cooked on a grill just tastes better to me. So yes, I'd risk it and often! George |

I will still be eating my barbecue foods, I will just be careful of the pieces I eat. I can still enjoy it without eating the charred parts. |

Lots of things produce carcinogens. Not all of which can be controlled or yield the same pleasure as the perfectly cooked piece of food from the grill. Yes the charred bits have carcinogens, but if we all lived perfect lives we'd be boring and so retentive we'd never enjoy life. I'll still be grilling my meat, veggies and bread. I don't use my stovetop in the summer much and don't plan on it. Charcoal is way cheaper than propane. |

If I stopped eating everything that they said you had a chance of getting something from.....I'd starve. I try to just be more causious. Wash things an extra time and cook things a few minutes longer:) |

Pheinbaugh2, I have to agree--I think a few years ago they had a study that said ice cream could cause cancer. I think that the medical community has a tendency to share these things before they have full knowledge of the veracity of the statements. They are grasping at straws to come up with an answer for a question which so far has no answer. |

I read and try to make sense of what all the 'experts' say. Then I do what makes sense to me. Avoiding BBQ altogether seems a bit extreme and unecessary. |

As long as the meat is cooked properly I see nothing wrong with it. it seems nothing is safe anymore if you listen to all the experts. |

I wouldn't want to miss them for the world. They are so delicious and mouth watering. If you worry about the carcinogen effect, just take a few slices of fresh cucumber after intake the barbecue food. It is believed the cucumber has the ingredients to neutralize the toxins in the barbecue food. |
