Subject: When the doctor doesn't offer more.....

I really get annoyed when a doctor feels a problem isn't important enough to treat, but I want the problem treated anyway. The example of fat lumps, or lipomas, got me thinking about this.

Have you ever pushed your doctor to treat or remove something that you felt was disfiguring, but wasn't life threatening?

If so, how did you finally get the procedure you wanted?

No, I never forced my doctor to do anything. I one time tried but he told me that trying to fix what was bothering me might cause worse problems and since the condition that I had was not life threatening he wasn't going to do anything.

I'm very happy with my doctor. I've been seeing him for almost 30 years and he knows my medical history and the medical histories of my sister and parents. I do trust him and in a way I;m glad I can't force him to do something.

He will always talk to me about his decisions and explain how he came to it.

Hmm, I think it would depend on the thing. If I had a mole that was bothering me (and I have: I had one right where my bra strap came together) and my doctor would not remove it, I would push to have it removed or see someone else. But I don't know about cosmetic things, like fat lumps or lipomas. Though I do have some fat I'd LOVE to be rid of, I think it's only coming off the usual way. *sigh*

I think if is cosmetic, then obviously your regular doctor would most likely not want to do it, they aren't a plastic surgeon after all. Something that could cause problems, such as a mole where your bra strap lies, or your eyelid is different.

Yes- I once went to the doctor at least 5 times for the same issue- It's still not 100% but I am thinking a specialist is the next step.

I think doctors need to listen to us- we know our bodies more than they do.

I think many doctors are just lazy. If they don't wish to perform a procedure they really should refer you to someone who will.

What do you think?
